Pedestrian charity, Living Streets has released new figures that show two-thirds of people walking less than an hour per week.  The vast majority of people blaming the fact they get too hot and sweaty en route to wherever they are going or even blaming a lack of the correct footwear for not walking places.  Those willing to shun such excuses, and not surprisingly, is the 55-64 age bracket and are more likely to walk more than two hours per day.

The charity is looking to have more people participate in the Great British Walking Challenge which is taking place in May and is looking to encourage people in walking further distances.  They wish to include simple steps such as parking the car further away, alighting from the bus a few stops early or simply taking a walk to loosen up and wind down.

Many employers include such programmes within the workplace.  Wellbeing is fast becoming a mainstay in the modern workplace as many employers are looking to have a fit and healthy workforce which means less sick days and more productivity.  Lots of employers now offer group health insurance in conjunction with this, ensuring they have a happy and healthy workforce.

By walking it is less strenuous than say, going to the gym or a high octane sport and can be done in lunchtime, making it the simplest form of exercise and fits in with your daily routine.  The benefits of walking include the reduced risk of heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure and Alzheimer’s disease.

Getting the most out of your People

When you have a small company you have to make the most of everything that you have to hand, and this in no way excludes your most valuable assets: your staff. If you look after your staff well then it will pay back in the long term, not only because they will be happy at their work but also because this will most likely be rewarded with loyalty to the company.

There are many ways in which you can make the workplace a better place, and there are many ways in which you can make the office environment a happier place, but we all know that, many people do not consider that healthiness is also a factor in keeping a happy workplace. Be it through arranging group sporting activities [competitive and non competitive] or through providing good group health insurance in the long run it is all going to pay off. Healthier workers take less days off ill, they are more vigorous whilst at work, and if they play a team sport together this will enhance their teamwork.

Of course this is not the only solution, there are many factors that must all fall into place in order that your business will thrive, but all of them must happen, so get your team working for you, and much more important getting them to work for the business as a whole.

      Your Most Valuable Assets

All companies prize their most valuable assets, their office space, their delivery fleet, anything that they need to get the job done in the most efficient manner. Especially in the world of Small Business it is absolutely a priority that everything runs as smoothly as possible. To this end all good bosses make sure that evrything in the workplace is insured, except for their most valuable asset: their employees.

Without their employees to man the office or the delivery vans then the entire company might fall apart at the seams. If this is the case then why are so many businesses reluctant to insure their people? Of course, we all know that there is no thing as a free lunch, but this can also be said about your company health insurance plan, but if the workforce is so vital then it too has to be insured.

There is a recession I know, but only those companies that do everything in their power to keep all their assets intact, will come sailing out at the other side, and those that take great care with their employees will be in the best position to retain them when the economic climate gets much better! So look after your most valuable assets before rushing to insure all the other material things are secured.

      Income Protection

In was reading an old Guardian post the other day about Income Protection Insurance. It seems sort of sensible to me that if you're going to be off work for a long time [and let's face it, just about everybody is boing to be off work at some point] then it is better that you have some cover.

But I don't know if it's good value or not. Everywhere I look seems to claim great value for self employed health insurance, then there are a million other generic websites that have too many forms to fill in. It's like a jungle out there at times.

I'll just have to keep at it until I eventually find what I want.

Health Insurance Numbers Bouyed by Eastern Numbers

In a possibly poor time for major health insurance providers new acquisitions in the new BRIC countries have offset a slow time in the old traditional markets, of Europe and North America.

With several countries just coming out of recession, the numbers of job losses [many of whom had corporate health insurance] meant that numbers overall in the "West" remained at normal positions, whilst the major boost only came from the new world.

This was also bolstered by the fact that some of the larger companies swallowed up a number of smaller eastern companies therefore taking their clients on board. The worst hit area overall was the UK numbers fell by a small percentage, mainly felt tobe due to rising costs in cancer care.

However an industry spokesman said that this was acceptable as the figures in South-East Asia, the Pacific and in Australia had grown so quickly that any short term slowing in Europe would be covered. It has not yet been figured, the breakdown of the individual types of policies sold, but it was thought that possibly company health insurance might have suffered, rather than individual policies.

Health Insurance - Read the Small Print

The differences between the policies offered by the many different Health Insurance companies vary so widely that it is causing bewilderment among Small & Medium Businesses according to research carried out by independent financial adviser Alan Lakey.

His research especially pointed out the discrepancies between the various thresholds for Income Protection Insurance and what qualifies as a debilitating injury. Many insurers demand that the injured party fail two out of six tests to qualify, amongst which are often rudimentary tasks such as 'communicating' and 'walking'. This can leave many people clearly unable to work at their full potential in 'limbo'.

However with the maximum sickness benefit available in the UK currently at £89.90, per week, most people with outside responsibilities need to take up income protection. The differences were felt most strikingly by those companies who offered corporate health insurance to small companies and to the self-employed, ie those that could not risk the loss of man hours to keep their business a viable concern.

The main finding of the research was that many people were more interested in the bottom line when it came to their insurance rather than reading the fine print.
